Vorarlberg State Committee (1945)

Ulrich Ilg, President of the State Committee

The Vorarlberg state committee was the first provisional state government after the end of the Second World War and the liberation of Vorarlberg in 1945. The state committee was formed at the urging of political forces in the population who urged the regaining of the sovereignty of the state of Vorarlberg, which had been revoked by the National Socialists. The state committee chaired by President Ulrich Ilg was appointed by the occupation authorities on May 24, 1945 and replaced by the elected state government Ilg I on December 11, after the state elections on November 25 .

The state committee acted at the same time as a legislative (legislative) and an executive (executive) body, since there was no elected state parliament as an official legislative body. The subordination of this provisional state government to the French occupation authorities was one of the strict conditions that were anchored in the appointment decree. The state committee had its seat in Feldkirch , where the occupation authorities for Vorarlberg were also located. Only the later elected state government moved the seat of government back to Bregenz . While in the rest of Austria the party landscape was divided into three spectra (People's Party, Socialists and Communists), the Vorarlberg Socialists declared that they would also take over the communists' agendas in the regional committee. As of October 30, 1945, the KPÖ was still considered as a separate parliamentary group in the state committee, which meant that the ÖVP also appointed another member to bring the balance of power back into line with the last elections held before the Anschluss .
