Live and act

Hans Mayer was born on June 28, 1898 as the son of railway worker Johann Mayer and his wife Genoveva in Saalfelden in the state of Salzburg . Due to the frequent relocations of his father for business reasons, Mayer grew up in various places in Austria and therefore attended elementary school in several places. From 1912 to 1915 he completed an apprenticeship as a decorative painter before he was drafted into military service in 1916. After the war, he joined the ÖBB shipping workshop in the Bregenz harbor as a painter on February 29, 1920 . On February 24, 1924, Hans Mayer married Maria Walker, who was one year older and with whom he subsequently had two children. Professionally, he then worked alternately as a federal railway official at the shipping inspection department in Bregenz (until 1940) and Lindau (1940 to 1945).

Politically, Mayer had belonged to the Social Democratic Workers' Party (SDAP) since 1914. After parliament was eliminated and Austria was transformed into a corporate state , Hans Mayer became a member of the patriotic front loyal to the government . After Austria's annexation to the German Reich, he joined the NSDAP as a party member on May 1, 1940 . Despite this political burden, Mayer was sworn in for the SPÖ on May 24, 1945 as part of the provisional Vorarlberg State Committee set up by the Allied occupying power and in this commissioned with the departments of transport and reparation. With the first free state elections in Vorarlberg in 1945 , the state committee was dissolved and a proper Vorarlberg state government was sworn in, to which Mayer was no longer a member. On December 11, 1945 he was appointed security director for the state of Vorarlberg, which he remained until June 30 of the following year. He was then Deputy Director of Security for exactly one year and then, until his retirement in 1959, he was a specialist inspector in the Directorate of Security. Hans Mayer died on August 10, 1966 while on vacation in Villach in the state of Carinthia .
