Fritz Mayer (born July 18, 1933 in Dornbirn , † September 13, 1988 in Bregenz ) was an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ). Mayer was mayor of the Vorarlberg state capital Bregenz from 1970 to 1988 and a member of the Vorarlberg state parliament from 1972 to 1987 .

Fritz Mayer was born in Dornbirn on July 18, 1933, the son of government councilor Josef Mayer and his wife Alma. In 1935, at the age of two, Fritz Mayer and his family moved to Bregenz, where he subsequently attended elementary school between 1939 and 1944 and then from 1944 to 1953 the Gallusstrasse high school. After completing his Matura at the Bundesgymnasium, Mayer went to Vienna to study civil engineering at the Technical University there. On December 12, 1959, he finally graduated with a degree in engineering.

In 1960 Fritz Mayer joined the Vorarlberger Illwerke as an engineer . As early as 1957, he had married his wife Friedolina (née Huber), with whom he subsequently had four children. Fritz Mayer had already become a member of the Socialist Party in 1954, having previously belonged to the Rote Falken since 1947 . In 1965 he was finally elected for the first time in a municipal council election as a substitute member of the city ​​council of Bregenz. In 1967 he became a full member of the Bregenz city council and city council. After the municipal council elections in 1970, Fritz Mayer was finally elected mayor of the state capital Bregenz with the help of the FPÖ (13 red-blue votes against 12 black votes). From then on he was full-time mayor of Bregenz. From May 17, 1972, he was also a member of the Vorarlberg state parliament as the successor to his resigned party colleague Walter Peter , which he remained until his voluntary resignation on July 31, 1987. From 1976 until his death, Fritz Mayer also headed the SPÖ Vorarlberg as its state party chairman.

In 1978 he was awarded the Anton Bruckner Ring .

Fritz Mayer died on September 13, 1988 at the age of 55 in his hometown of Bregenz. In the same year he was made honorary chairman of the SPÖ Vorarlberg and an honorary citizen of the city of Bregenz. In Bregenz, the southwestern station forecourt is named Fritz-Mayer-Platz in his memory .
