Markus Linhart (born October 9, 1959 in Ankara , Turkey ) is an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ) and mayor of the state capital Bregenz .

education and profession

Linhart was born in 1959 in Ankara , the son of a diplomat who worked in the Austrian embassy in Turkey . After attending French schools in Zurich and Baghdad , he graduated from the private high school of the Jesuit orderStella Matutina ” in Feldkirch in 1977 . In 1977/78 he completed the military service as a one-year volunteer and became a reserve lieutenant in the course of a reserve officer training .

From 1978 to 1984 Linhart studied electrical engineering at the Technical University of Vienna and graduated with excellent results. Among other things, he financed his studies as an auxiliary ski instructor in the Montafon and Senn auf Almen in the Montafon and the Bregenzerwald . From 1985 to 1988 he worked in the line construction department at Vorarlberger Illwerke AG . From 1988 to 1990 he took on special board responsibilities there.

In 1990 Linhart joined the Austrian Economic Association . In the same year he took over the management of the association "Technikum Vorarlberg" (from 1994 "Fachhochschul-Studienzüge Vorarlberg") and led efforts to establish the Fachhochschule Vorarlberg until 1998.

Political career

In the 1995 municipal council elections in Bregenz, Markus Linhart was elected city councilor for economic and regional affairs, tourism and the coordination of residential construction. He also took over the chairmanship of the Regional Planning Association of Lake Constance and of the Bregenz Economic Association. On January 12, 1998, at the age of 39, Markus Linhart was elected mayor of Bregenz, succeeding Siegfried Gasser . Since January 2018, Markus Linhart has been in office for over twenty years, ahead of Karl Tizian , who was mayor for almost exactly 20 years, the longest ruling mayor of Bregenz.

Since 2002, Linhart has also been Vice President of the Austrian Association of Cities .

Private life

Markus Linhart has two children from his first marriage. In 2008 he married Manuela Knafl a second time. Today he lives with his partner Claudia Depaoli, their children and a son in Bregenz. He is the younger brother of the Austrian diplomat Michael Linhart .

He has been a member of the Catholic student association KHV Babenberg Vienna in the ÖCV since 1978 .
