history

Town hall Lüttringhausen from the west

After the premises of the old town hall in Gertenbachstrasse 33 no longer seemed adequate towards the end of the 19th century, the council of the prosperous small town of Lüttringhausen under Mayor Richard Gertenbach made the decision to build a new town hall.

On June 21, 1907, the foundation stone was laid for the new building according to plans by the architect Arthur Schmidt . The inauguration was celebrated on September 19, 1908. Originally, a Catholic church was to be built at this point, as a large wooden cross that served as a pilgrimage destination used to stand here. Mayor Gertenbach, however, convinced the Catholics that the location was better suited for the town hall and swapped the property with one on Richard-Pick-Strasse, on which the Holy Cross Church is today. The name "Kreuzberg" was retained, however.

building

The two and a half storey town hall has an approximately L-shaped floor plan. It was built under the influence of Art Nouveau , which is reflected both outside on the facade and inside, especially in the stairwell. The most striking feature of the town hall is the octagonal, slated town hall tower with the surrounding and inaccessible (dummy) gallery and the tower clock with its four dials . After the renovation in 2008 (the stability of the half-timbered construction was in question), the tower can now be climbed by visitors on certain dates. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the town hall, outdoor lighting was installed in the building. The council chamber, in which the district council of the district meets, has also received a new lighting system.
