The Vorarlberg State Library in Bregenz is a regional library that is responsible for the Austrian state of Vorarlberg .

The library was founded in 1904 as part of the Vorarlberg State Archives . Since it became independent on September 1, 1977, the academic library has been a subordinate department of the Vorarlberg state government .

The main focus of the holdings is the Vorarlbergensien, the regional literature about Vorarlberg. The Franz Michael Felder archive of the Vorarlberg State Library serves as the Vorarlberg literature archive. In addition, audiovisual media (especially television and radio) are documented in the media library.

In addition to books, the Vorarlberg State Library also offers sound recordings and music CDs, subject-related videos, DVDs and audio books. The library uses an OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog).

In the state library there is a well-preserved copy of the Emser Chronik published in 1616 - a “masterpiece of book printing” that has been described several times as “the most beautiful book ever printed in Vorarlberg”.

building

The Babenwohl Castle (formerly "Babenboll") of the Counts of Bregenz from the second half of the 14th century was acquired on February 11, 1854 by Baron Ernest von Pöllnitz, who came from Würzburg. He had the castle renovated and expanded with a stair tower by the Bregenz master builder Gabriel Mallaun . In the following years the property was inhabited by the Pöllnitz and Douglass families. The Bludenz writer Grete Gulbransson , who often stayed on Babenwohl in her youth, reported on life in this building in her novel “Geliebte Schatten”.

In 1907 the monastery was built and expanded on the property. In the south wing, the structure of the former castle is still preserved today. In 1910/11 the library wing was built at right angles to it according to plans by the Swiss architect Adolf Gaudy (1872–1956).

The library has been housed in the former St. Gallus Benedictine Abbey since 1985. In 1981 the monastery went to the state of Vorarlberg and since 1993 the former library of the Benedictine monastery St. Gallusstift, the so-called "Dome Hall", has been available. This has been restored true to the original.

Digital library

With the volare system ( acronym for Vorarlberger Landesrepositorium), the Vorarlberger Landesbibliothek has been able to offer digital objects in a user-friendly way and at the same time secure them for the long term since 2015.
