Franz Michael Felder (born May 13, 1839 in Schoppernau , Vorarlberg , † April 26, 1869 there ) was an Austrian writer, social reformer and farmer.

Life

Franz Michael Felder grew up in the simplest of mountain farming conditions, suffered several strokes of fate (including the loss of an eye due to a medical malpractice) and, considering his short life, left behind a rich work. With his socially critical novels and stories , based on the model of Jeremias Gotthelf , he devoted himself to village history , but also represents poetic realism . The ( ultramontane ) clergy were very hostile to him.

With his brother-in-law Kaspar Moosbrugger (1830-1917) he founded the early socialist " Vorarlberg'sche Party of Equal Rights " (not of the sexes, but of the social classes) in 1866 . As a farmer, he worked tirelessly to improve working conditions in agriculture and founded a cheese trading association to break the notorious cheese counts' trading monopoly and a livestock insurance industry.

On February 4, 1861, Felder married his long-time acquaintance Anna Katherina Moosbrugger, known as Nanni. 7 years later, in 1868, his wife died unexpectedly after a brief illness and left him with the five children Jakob, Kaspar, Hermann, Martin and Katherina. 7 months later, Franz Michael Felder also died of pulmonary tuberculosis at the age of 29 in the house where he was born in Schoppernau . The estate, fragments and collections of Franz Michael Felders are stored in the Franz Michael Felder archive of the Vorarlberg State Library.
