The Espagne was a passenger ship that entered service in 1909 for the French Compagnie Générale Transatlantique . After it was used as a troop transport during World War I , it returned to passenger service until 1932. In 1934 the ship was scrapped in Saint-Nazaire, France .
period of service
The Espagne was built by Chantiers & Ateliers de Provence in Port de Bouc and launched in 1909. In October 1910, the ship was finally put into service for the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique . The Espagne was used from its home port of Le Havre to Central America and the West Indies .
In April 1911 the ship was chartered out as a troop transport to carry troops from Marseille to Algiers , Bône and Philippeville . It was also deployed to Constantinople from Algeria .
In 1912 the ship returned to passenger service, but from now on it was used on the route from Le Havre to New York City . After the Tampico incident , the ship transported more than 100 refugees from Puerto Mexico to Veracruz in April 1914 .
In 1915, Espagne switched to the route from Bordeaux to New York. In 1916, the ship was finally withdrawn from service and converted again into a troop transport. It was not until 1920 that she returned to passenger service and from now on she was deployed to Central America from Le Havre.
In 1926, the Espagne had to be repaired in dry dock after it ran aground off A Coruña and one of its propellers was damaged. The Espagne was in service until June 1932 and was then launched in Saint-Nazaire. In 1934 the ship was finally scrapped after two years of lay-in on the grounds of Chantiers de l'Atlantique , where the new flagship of the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique, Normandy , was being built at the same time .
