The series of the CMA CGM Marco Polo type is one of the largest container ship types in the world (2013). With slightly smaller dimensions, they have a higher load capacity and more container spaces than the previously largest ships in the Emma Mærsk class , but were already surpassed as the largest container ships in the world by the Triple E class in 2013 .

history

The CMA CGM Marco Polo was launched on November 5, 2012 as the type ship of a series of three ULCV ships of the same construction. Originally eight ships were to be built. However, the French shipping company CMA CGM from Marseille, as the client, canceled part of the order in early 2011. The ship with hull number 4161 was built at the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering shipyard in Geoje , South Korea . The maiden voyage to Europe began on November 7, 2012 in the Chinese port city of Ningbo or the Ningbo-Zhoushan port .

On May 2, 2013 the second ship of the series was delivered to CMA CGM. It was christened CMA CGM Jules Verne ; originally, CMA CGM Zheng He was planned as a baptismal name ( Zheng He was a Chinese admiral who died around 1434). The third ship in the series should initially be named CMA CGM Vasco da Gama . It entered service on May 30, 2013 as CMA CGM Alexander von Humboldt .

The ships are used on the FAL container line service (French Asia Line) between the Far East and Europe.

In terms of shipbuilding, the double-hulled ships are based on the slightly smaller units of the CMA CGM Christophe Colomb class . Here, too , unlike in the majority of conventional container ships, the deckhouse is arranged far forward, which enables an improved line of sight and thus higher loading of the front deck. Among other things, the bunker tanks are arranged below the superstructure in order to meet the latest MARPOL regulations. Main drive of the ships is with heavy oil -powered, turbocharged two-stroke crosshead engine of the Finnish manufacturer Wärtsilä (Type 14RT-flex96C ) with 14 cylinders and an output of 80,080 kW (108,878 hp). Its maximum torque is 7,500 kNm at 102 / mi. It is the most powerful marine diesel engine currently available. The engine weighs 2,300 tons, the crankshaft alone weighs 300 tons. The relatively low consumption of the diesel engine is due to its high efficiency of 49.0 percent. Modern car engines are around 35 to 45 percent.

The bore of the motor is 96 cm, the stroke 2.50 m. This results in a displacement of 1,809 l and 5,720 kW per cylinder. Extrapolated, this results in a displacement of 25,320 l with 14 cylinders. On the flow-optimized underwater hull, propeller guide surfaces are installed in front of the ship to improve the flow behavior of the propeller, which, like the rudder shape , is intended to improve energy efficiency. The eight holds of the ships of the CMA CGM Marco Polo type are closed with pontoon hatch covers. The ships have a capacity of 16,020  TEU , 1,200 refrigerated containers can be connected.
