The ships of the CMA-CGM-Christophe-Colomb class are among the largest container ships in the world.

history

The type ship CMA CGM Christophe Colomb with hull number 4156 was completed on November 10, 2009 at the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering shipyard in Geoje , South Korea . The client was the shipping company CMA CGM from Marseille . The series started with the type ship CMA CGM Christophe Colomb was initially completed by the sister ships CMA CGM Corte Real , CMA CGM La Pérouse , CMA CGM Magellan CMA CGM Amerigo Vespucci , which are technically almost the same type of ship as the MSC-Daniela -Class acts. In addition, the 30 meters longer and three meters wider ships CMA CGM Marco Polo , CMA CGM Jules Verne and CMA CGM Alexander von Humboldt of an enlarged type were built.

The five ships of the 13,344 TEU series from CMA CGM were from the beginning of June 2010 with five other 13,092 TEU ships of the Maersk Edinburgh class used by Maersk in the slow-steaming FAL5 container service used to the Far East.

On the one hand, the size of the double-hulled ships is of primary importance ; at the end of 2009 they were among the largest container ships in the world. In terms of shipbuilding, however, there are a number of innovations and details that are more conspicuous, especially in terms of environmental protection in maritime shipping . In contrast to the majority of conventional container ships, the deckhouse is arranged far forward, which enables an improved line of sight and thus higher forward deck loading. Among other things, the bunker tanks are arranged below the superstructure in order to meet the latest MARPOL regulations. The powerful drive system with the most powerful two - stroke diesel engine currently available , the 14RT-flex96C, is also outstanding . This is arranged as far aft as possible and its electronic control should reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by around three percent. On the flow-optimized underwater hull, guide surfaces are attached in front of the ship's propeller to improve the flow behavior of the propeller, which, like the shape of the rudder , is intended to improve energy efficiency. Other technical features are also noteworthy, such as a ship garbage compactor or an integrated oil collection system. The holds of the CMA-CGM-Christophe-Colomb class are closed with pontoon hatch covers. The ships have a capacity of 13,344  TEU , 800 refrigerated containers can be connected.
