history

In the Silla Dynasty , the name Geoje-gun was first used in 757 during the reign of King Gyeongdeok (경덕왕, 景德 王, 742–765). From 983 to 1423 different names (Giseong-hyeon and Jechang-gun) were used during the Goryeo Dynasty . In the Joseon Dynasty , the name changed to Geoje-hyeon in 1423, to Geoje-bu in 1489 and again to Geoje-gun in 1895. On March 18, 1914, the districts of Yongnam-gun, Jinnam-gun and Geoje-gun were united to form Tongyeong-gun by the General Government of Chōsen .

After the establishment of South Korea, the Geoje-gun district was proclaimed on October 14, 1951. The district administration had its provisional seat from January 1, 1953 in Jangseungpo and moved to Gohyeon on October 1, 1956. On January 1, 1989, the Jangseungpo-eup District was separated from Geoje-gun and made a city. As early as January 1, 1995, the city of Jangseungpo and the Geoje-gun district were combined to form the city of Geoje (Geoje-si).
