Namhae-gun ( Korean : 남해군 ) is a district in Gyeongsangnam-do Province in South Korea . The district essentially consists of the two large islands, Namhaedo ( 남해도 ) and Changeondo ( 창선도 ). The largest city in the county is Namhae . It is located on Namhaedo Island.

geography

Namhae-gun with the main island of Namhaedo and the smaller island of Changeondo

Namhae-gun consists of the main island Namhaedo, the much smaller island Changeondo, the three small inhabited islands, Jodo ( 조도 ), Hodo ( 호도 ) and Nodo ( 노도 ) and of a further 73 small uninhabited islands.

With an area of 357.66 km 2, the district extends over 26 km in width and 30 km in length. Namhae-gun thus makes up three percent of the land area of Gyeongsangnam-do Province. The 302 km long coastline of the district has many inlets and natural harbors, as well as large sandy beaches in the northwest. The highest peaks are with the mountains Mangun ( 망운산 ) (786 m), Geum ( 금산 ) (701 m) and Won ( 왼산 ) (627 m) on the island of Namhaedo.

On and around parts of the main island is the Hallyeohaesang National Park ( 한려 해상 국립 공원 ), which occupies almost 78.9 km 2 of the island and covers a total area of 545.63 km 2 . 72.3% of the park is in the sea.

history

It is not yet clear when the islands were settled. It is assumed, however, that the first people came before the Samhan period ( 삼한 ) (1st century BC to 3rd century AD) and fed on fishing and the produce of the soil. Namhae was first mentioned in the 7th year of the reign of King Shinmun ( 진문 ) of the United Silla Dynasty , around 690 AD. However, the district was still under the name Jeonyasan-gun and was legally subordinate to Cheongju ( 청주시 ). In 757, under King Gyeongdeok, the county was assigned to the administration of Gwangju ( 광주 광역시 ) and renamed Namhae-gun.

In 1018 the county underwent another name change under King Hyeonjong and was named Namhae-hyeon in his honor . In 1413, at the time of the Joseon Dynasty , Namhae-hyeon was assigned to Hadong County , north of Namhae-hyeon on the mainland, and was given the name Hanam-hyun . Further administrative assignments followed, as well as the renaming to Namhae-hyun in the further course of the 15th century.

During the war between Korea and Japan , the district was uninhabitable for seven years from 1592. In 1895, Namhae-hyun was finally renamed Namhae-gun and divided into 8 Myuns (Korean administrative units). 1973 Namhae-myeon was raised to the Eup (largest city in a district as an administrative unit) and the rest was divided into seven Myeons (administrative unit of a district). The two myeons Sangju and Miju were later formed through a further administrative reorganization, so that from that point on, Namhae-gun County had one Eup and nine myeons.

Transport links

Namhae Bridge ( 남해 대교 )

Namhae-gun is connected to the mainland by two bridges. The Namhae Bridge ( 남해 대교 ), built in 1973 as a suspension bridge, is 660 m long and connects Namhae-gun with Hadong-gun in the north. The Changseon-Samcheonpo Bridge ( 창선 - 삼천포 대교 ), which connects Namhae-gun to the mainland in the northeast via three islands, actually consists of five individual bridges of different designs. The bridges were built in 2003 and have a total length of 3.4 km.

In June 2011 a ferry terminal in Seosang Port ( 서상 항구 ) was completed. Two ferries with a capacity of 200 people were supposed to provide a 20-minute ferry connection between Yeosu and Namhae-gun for the Expo 2012 in Yeosu ( 여수시 ) and thus attract tourists.

The nearest airport is on the mainland south of Jinju ( 진주시 ).

economy

Namhae-gun makes a living from agriculture, fishing and tourism, with the latter clearly being the county's growing industry. Due to its location, the favorable climate and the natural landscapes of the islands, Namhae-gun does not have to fear missing tourists.

nature

The natural landscape of Namhae-gun consists mainly of a forested mountain landscape with rocky coastlines and sandy bays. In the northeastern part of Namhaedo facing Jinju Bay ( 진주만 ), the coastline is mostly flatter. Agriculture determines the landscape there.

In addition to the Hallyeohaesang National Park is located in the north of the island Namhaedo the 227  ha large Namhae Pyeonbaek Natural Recreation Forest . The forest was turned over in 1998 for recreational purposes. The namesake for the forest were the Pyeonbaek trees ( 편백 ), in German Hinoki false cypress , which make up the main tree population of the forest.

Attractions

There are six Buddhist temples on the two islands: Boriam ( 벌이 암 ), Hwabang ( 화방 ), Yongmun ( 용문 ), Undaeam ( 운 대암 ), Mangunam ( 망운암 ) and Beopheung ( 벞흥 ), with the first three being marketed as a tourist attraction become. All temples are accessible.

The Hallyeohaesang National Park ( 한려 해상 국립 공원 ) is another attraction of Namhae-gun. The Hallyeohaesang National Marine Park Office in Sangju-ri, Sangju-myeon and the two information centers in Sangju-myeon and Idong-myeon give tourist information and Assistance for visiting the national park.

Dogil Maeul ( 독일 마을 )

Also on the island is a Butterfly Ecological Park with a butterfly house, an experience area, a butterfly exhibition and a butterfly farm for breeding the animals.

German village (독일 마을)

A specialty in Korea is Dogil Maeul ( 독일 마을 ), the German village on the east coast of Namhaedo Island. Planned in 2001 by the provincial politician Du-Kwan Kim ( 김두관 ), the village offers former Korean guest workers working in Germany to enjoy retirement with their Korean or German partners in a settlement with typical German buildings and furnishings. The village is now well known far beyond the borders of Korea and attracts plenty of tourists, which is tolerated by the residents of the village, but not so welcome.
