Augustine Cheong Myong-jo

Augustine Cheong Myong-jo ( kor .: 정명조 아우구스티노 ) (born May 25, 1935 in Geoje , Keishō-nandō , Chōsen Province , former Japanese Empire , now South Korea ; † June 1, 2007 in Busan , South Korea) was Bishop of the Diocese of Busan .

Life

Augustine Cheong Myong-jo studied at the Catholic University of Seoul from 1956 to 1962. He was ordained a priest on December 22, 1962 . In 1965 he joined the South Korean Army. From 1968 to 1969 he was a first lieutenant as a chaplain on the front line in the Vietnam War ; he was a member of the military until 1985, most recently with the rank of colonel .

On October 23, 1989, Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop-Military Ordinary for the Korean Military Ordinary and at the same time titular Bishop of Tubulbaca . On November 5, 1998 he was appointed coadjutor of the diocese of Pusan, on August 28, 1999, succeeding Gabriel Lee Gab-sou, he was appointed bishop of the diocese of Busan.

He has been Vice President since 2002 and President of the Korean Bishops' Conference (CBCK) since 2005.

Augustine Cheong Myong-jo was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2005 ; he was active in his episcopate until his death.
