The Ningbo-Zhoushan Port was created through a merger of the ports of Ningbo and Zhoushan on January 1, 2006. At the same time, the newly established Administrative Commission for the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port took over the administrative tasks of the new port. The port is located in Zhejiang Province on the east coast of China .

Geographical location

Ningbo-Zhoushan Port is located in Hangzhou Bay , at the confluence of the Qiantang and Yong rivers .

The next largest metropolis is Shanghai , it is only 70 nautical miles to the mouth of the Yangtze . The Ningbo Lishe International Airport is in the immediate vicinity .

The islands of Jintang (in the east), Daxie (in the west) and Dahuangmang (in the south) are designated as nature reserves .

Port areas

Zhenhai port area

The Zhenhai port area is an estuary port in the confluence of the Yongjiang . There are 20 terminals on an area of ​​4.9 km² and a usable coastline of 3.683 km  . Seven terminals are designed for a ship tonnage of 10,000 and one for a ship tonnage of 50,000 tons.

The main cargo handled are: coal (4.5 million tons), liquid chemicals (3 million tons), containers and bulk goods .

Ningbo port area

The old port area of ​​Ningbo is located at the confluence of Fenghuajiang , Yuyaojiang and Yongjiang. The main waterway to the mouth of the Yongjiang is 22 kilometers long and 80 to 120 meters wide. The port area has a 1,330 meter long quay and an area of ​​123.5  hectares .

Beilun port area

The Beilun port area covers an area of ​​150 km² and is located at the junction between the east bank of the Yongjiang estuary and the south bank of the Jintang waterway. It extends from the Changtiaozui lighthouse at the mouth of the Yongjiang in the west to the Chuanshan crossing point in Chaiqiao in the east.

The average water depth in the Beilun port area is more than 50 meters. The narrowest part of the fairway is more than 700 meters wide. Ocean-going vessels up to 250,000 tons can enter and leave the waterway freely. 300,000-ton ships can enter and exit at high tide . A 34 km² water area is available for anchoring and mooring, on which more than 300 10,000-ton ships can anchor at the same time.

The port is open on average 340 days a year. The port is only closed in the event of typhoons .

The 120 km long deep-water coastline offers the possibility of setting up up to 285 berths (including 152 deep-water berths). There are currently 27 deep water berths. In addition, there are currently transshipment berths for 100,000-tonne ships, 200,000-tonne ships ( bulk goods ), 250,000-tonne oil tankers and 80,000-tonne container ships.

For the storage of ore are 29.6 ha, of which three million tons of ore can be stored. The annual capacity is 30 million tons of iron ore, making the port the largest transshipment point for imported iron ore in China.

The annual handling capacity for containers is 7 million TEU . An area of ​​330 ha is available for temporary storage of the containers.

Goods and transport

The total cargo handling of the Ningbo Zhoushan Port in 2017 amounted to 1,000 million tons. The Ningbo-Zhoushan Port is thus the largest seaport in the world. The container throughput in 2018 was 26 million TEU. This makes Ningbo-Zhoushan the port with the third largest container handling in the world.
