After the Blue Star Line had lost a large number of ships in the war, a new building program followed in the first post-war years, which also included the four units of the Argentina Star class. All four ships were built at the Cammell, Laird & Company shipyard in Birkenhead. The launch of the type ship Argentina Star took place on September 26, 1946, the commissioning on June 14, 1947. The three sister ships followed until October 1948. All four units were used on the route from London to Buenos Aires.
The ships of the series had a total of three decks with capacity for up to 51 first-class passengers. In addition to the dining room, the passenger facilities included a smoking room, a lounge and a play deck at the level of the navigation bridge, which was adjoined by a closed veranda. The ships were designed for the transport of refrigerated cargo .
In September 1969, a fire broke out on board the Paraguay Star lying in London, causing great damage. The ship was written off as a total loss and sold to Hamburg for demolition , where it arrived on September 19, 1969. The three other units in the class remained in use for three years longer before they were also retired and sold to Taiwan for demolition .
