Fredric Brown
Fredric William Brown (born October 29, 1906 in Cincinnati , Ohio , † March 11, 1972 in Tucson , Arizona ; spelling also: Frederic or Frederick Brown) was an American science fiction and crime writer.
biography
Fredric Brown was raised in Cincinnati as the only child of S. Karl Lewis Brown, a journalist, and Emma Amelia Brown (née Graham). His mother died in 1920 when he was fourteen years old. The next year his father also died. Fredric Brown then lived with a friend's family until he graduated from high school in 1922. After school he worked as an office worker in a company that closed in 1924. He took on various odd jobs and in 1927 studied English, history and religion for a semester at Hanover College in Hanover , Indiana . He broke off further studies at the University of Cincinnati in 1928. In 1929 he married Helen Ruth Brown. They moved to Milwaukee , Wisconsin in 1930 and had two sons. Fredric Brown tried to keep the family afloat with various short positions. In 1936 he began to write humorous short stories for trade magazines . Brown had a column in The American Printer for ten years. From 1936 to 1945 he worked intermittently as a proofreader. In addition, he continued to publish short stories, increasingly for pulp magazines , mainly crime novels, but also westerns and science fiction. He sold his first detective story, Monday's an Off Night , in 1938. His first science fiction story, Not Yet the End , was published in Captain Future magazine in 1941 .
His stories were often grotesque, satirical, and bizarre, and were often the length of an expanded joke. So describes z. B. The end of a professor who invented a time machine for traveling back in time. The story goes up to the point where the professor presses the button on the machine, whereupon the whole story is repeated word for word backwards to the beginning.
Thanks to the many short stories, the popularity of Fredric Brown gradually increased. His first long crime novel, Hunter's First Hunt , won an Edgar Award in 1948 for best crime debut . With the help of his uncle Ambrose, the young Ed Hunter is looking for his father's murderer. The book was the first in a series of novels and stories about the Chicago Hunters.
After his first successful novel, Fredric Brown became a full-time writer. In addition to the Hunter series and other crime novels, he mainly wrote science fiction literature. He also wrote scripts for Alfred Hitchcock's TV series.
Some of his stories were made into films, such as B. The black statue or the arena short story that formed the basis of the Star Trek episode of the same name .
Brown divorced his first wife in 1947 and married Elizabeth Charlier the following year. The two often changed their place of residence. Fredric Brown had repeated problems with allergies and asthma. The couple moved to Tucson , Arizona in 1954 in the hope of a more favorable climate . Fredric Brown's health continued to deteriorate and he had drinking problems. His last novel was published in 1963 and his last short story in 1965. Fredric Brown died on March 11, 1972 at the age of 65.
In 2012 Brown posthumously received the Cordwainer Smith Rediscovery Award for forgotten or no longer adequately recognized science fiction authors.
Fredric Brown's shortest SF short story
Fredric Brown condensed a text by Thomas Bailey Aldrich into brevity that could hardly be beaten:
- The last man on earth sat alone in a room. There was a knock on the door ...
“The last man on earth was sitting alone in a room. There was a knock on the door ... "
This story forms the starting point for the much longer story Knock, knock! contained in The Lost Paradox .
