Wilhelm Olbrich (born May 24, 1894 in Munich , † April 16, 1974 in Bad Kissingen ) was a German publisher and book scholar .

Life

Wilhelm Olbrich was born in Munich on May 24, 1894. At the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich (LMU) he began to study philosophy, German, Romance studies and history, which was interrupted by his participation in the First World War. Olbrich served as a sergeant in the 10th Royal Bavarian Field Artillery Regiment and was awarded the Iron Cross, 2nd class. After the war he resumed his studies at the LMU and received his doctorate in 1921 with the dissertation The Admission of Gottfried Keller in Germany . In the same year, Olbrich joined the Leipzig- based publishing house owned by Karl Wilhelm Hiersemann , of which he took over in 1925.

In 1932, Olbrich published an introduction to publishing , which was followed by two additional editions and, together with Joachim Kirchner and Karl Löffler , he published the three-volume lexicon of the entire book industry from 1935 to 1937 .

After the Second World War and the expropriation and liquidation of the Leipziger Verlag, Olbrich rebuilt the Anton Hiersemann Verlag in Stuttgart from 1949 . In 1950 he founded the series Der Romanführer .

Wilhelm Olbrich died on April 16, 1974 in Bad Kissingen.
