Charles V. De Vet

Charles Vincent De Vet (born October 28, 1911 in Fayette , Michigan ; died January 5, 1997 ) was an American science fiction writer.

Life

De Vet was the son of John De Vet, marine engineer on a United Fruit Company freighter , and Lucille, née Feastre. He married Elenore Derwin in 1935, with whom he had two children (1938 and 1941). In 1938 he made his bachelor's degree at Teachers College at Ferris State University and then studied until 1940 at the University of Michigan . At the same time he worked from 1934 to 1940 as a teacher at various schools in Brampton , Ida and Manistee in Michigan. From 1940 until his retirement in 1968 he was an employee of the US Postal Service .

De Vets' first SF short story, The Unexpected Weapon , appeared in Amazing Stories in September 1950 . In the following years until 1991 he published over 50 short stories and two novels. His first novel, Second Game , written with Katherine MacLean , is about a person who has to take part in a dangerous tournament on an alien planet where social status depends on success in a chess-like game. The novel made it into the final selection of the Hugo Awards in 1959 in the short novel category .

De Vet's stories have been translated into German, French and Italian.
