Rog Phillips
Rog Phillips (actually Roger Phillip Graham ; born February 20, 1909 in Spokane , Washington ; died March 2, 1966 in San Francisco , California ) was an American science fiction writer, best known for his SF fan column The Club House .
Life
Graham studied at Gonzaga University in Spokane , where he graduated with a bachelor's degree, and then at the University of Washington in Seattle . Before the Second World War he worked as a power station engineer and during the war as a welder in a shipyard. After the war, he turned to writing and became one of Raymond A. Palmer's writers at Ziff Davis , which was then responsible for the SF magazine Amazing Stories .
From 1948 to 1953 he wrote 57 episodes for Amazing as Rog Phillips of The Club House , a column about SF fandom for SF fans. At the same time, the similarly structured column Fandora's Box appeared in the magazine Imagination , for which Graham's first wife Mari Wolf was the author. In fact, Graham is said to have been the author here too. These columns are said to have shaped the development of the SF fandom after 1945. In 1956, Graham married Honey Wood, who was also active in the SF fandom.
In addition to his columns, Graham published over 170 short stories and six novels, using numerous other pseudonyms in addition to Rog Phillips , including Craig Browning, Franklin Bahl, Peter Worth and Melva Rogers . In addition to his science fiction, Graham also wrote detective and crime stories.
In 1956 Graham was nominated for Best Columnist and in 1959 for the short story Rat in the Skull for the Hugo Award . Meanwhile, his work was largely forgotten from 2012 published anthologies of his short stories and his collected Clubhouse -Kolumnen at Goldleaf Books , published by the SF-historian Earl Terry Kemp , who was Graham's godchild. Four of his novels have been translated into German.
