Stanley G. Weinbaum

Stanley Grauman Weinbaum (born April 4, 1902 in Louisville (Kentucky) , † December 14, 1935 in Milwaukee ( Wisconsin )) was an American science fiction writer . Although he was only active as a writer for a short time, he had a strong influence on science fiction. Especially the short story A Mars Odyssey is still counted among the best of the genre.

Life

Stanley G. Weinbaum was born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1902 and grew up in Milwaukee . He studied chemistry at the University of Wisconsin . When he had taken an exam instead of a friend because of a bet, which was discovered shortly afterwards, he left college in 1923 without a degree. Soon afterwards he began to write, initially two novels, a romance and an operetta, but only found a publisher for the romance. In the early thirties he joined the science fiction fan group Milwaukee Fictioneers around the author Ralph Milne Farley . Under his influence, Weinbaum turned to pulp magazines . His first story, A Mars Odyssey , which appeared in Wonder Stories in 1934 , was a huge success. Another eleven stories appeared in quick succession until Weinbaum died of throat cancer on December 14, 1935.

Stanley Weinbaum was married to Margaret H. Kay, who published his other works after his death and in 1994 gave his estate to Temple University in Philadelphia.

His short story The Extreme Level of Adaptation was filmed in 1957 by Kurt Neumann under the title She Devil .

In 1973, a crater on Mars was named in his honor , which is right next to a crater named after Robert A. Heinlein . An asteroid was named after Weinbaum in 2010. It bears the name (196540) Weinbaum .

In 2008 he was posthumously awarded the Cordwainer Smith Rediscovery Award for forgotten or no longer adequately honored science fiction authors.
