Dieter Reinhold Hasselblatt (born January 8, 1926 in Reval ; † February 19, 1997 in Neuwied ) was a German author of radio plays , novels and non-fiction books , radio editor and radio play director. He also wrote under the pseudonyms Peter Zweydorn , Karl-Herbert Henrici and Bertil E. Sahlstedt .

Life

Born in Reval in 1926, Hasselblatt was the son of a bank clerk and attended the German knight and cathedral school in Reval . On November 9, 1939, he and his family moved first to Poland and then to Germany. Dieter Hasselblatt was in the Hitler Youth as well as air force helper and radio operator in the air force . He was taken prisoner in 1944 and returned to Germany in 1948. Hasselblatt made up his Abitur in 1949. He studied medieval art history, philosophy, history, musicology, German and fairy tale research in Marburg and Freiburg . In 1959 he received his doctorate with a thesis on Franz Kafka at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg for Dr. phil. After completing his studies, Hasselblatt tried his hand at various professions, including as a forest worker, peddler, boarding school teacher and animal care intern at the Frankfurt Zoo with Bernhard Grzimek . In 1963 he took over the radio play editorial office for Deutschlandfunk in Cologne.

Services

Since Deutschlandfunk itself did not produce any radio plays - radio plays from various broadcasters were taken over - Hasselblatt set up an archive of ARD radio plays. In addition to the dates that were first broadcast, the card index also contains reviews. This archive, which has been kept for decades, has become a huge source of information for research. Hasselblatt, a friend of science fiction , made science fiction known to a larger audience from 1969 with 100 slots for SF radio plays on the DLF. The respective radio plays were accompanied by essays , panel discussions and afterwords.

In 1974 Hasselblatt became head of the radio play department at Bayerischer Rundfunk and worked as an editor, dramaturge and director. Hasselblatt, who had many contacts with national and international SF authors, persuaded Stanisław Lem to write exclusively for the radio for the first time. Hasselblatt broadcast the original Orson Welles “War of the Worlds” radio play in Germany for the first time. Despite legal difficulties, he got hold of the German broadcasting rights for "The Hitch-Hikers Guide to the Galaxy" . According to Hördat , he wrote 13 radio plays himself.

In addition to his radio activity, Hasselblatt was also active in other areas. He wrote essays, novels, short stories, short stories and fairy tales, and reviews of games. Hasselblatt was a founding member of the “ Game of the Year ” jury and was awarded the Bamberg Prize from AG Toys e. V. excellent. Hasselblatt wrote travel reports, non-fiction books and reviews as well as essays for the yearbook Das Science Fiction Jahr .

From 1972 Hasselblatt had lectureships at the Universities of Bochum and Munich for trivial communication and audio dramaturgy. After a stroke in 1985, Dieter Hasselblatt retired in 1987, but an agreement was reached that allowed him to oversee ten radio plays per year at Bayerischer Rundfunk. Dieter Hasselblatt had been a member of the PEN since 1977 , which he himself considered to be the highest honor of his life. In 1986 he was awarded the Kurd-Laßwitz Prize for his services to the SF radio play .

Dieter Hasselblatt died on February 19, 1997 at the age of 71 in Neuwied.
