Harl Vincent
Harl Vincent (actually Harold Vincent Schoepflin ; born October 19, 1893 in Buffalo , New York ; died May 5, 1968 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American science fiction writer whose over 70 stories were featured in Pulp magazines published in the 1930s and 1940s.
Life
At the age of five, Vincent began drawing technical devices and said goodbye to the Lord Fauntleroy look and curls. He then followed his inclination to technical high school , then studied engineering at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy , but dropped out because he married Ruth Hoff, had a family and had to earn money.
He first worked as a draftsman for Westinghouse , completed his studies in evening classes and then became an engineer who designed and tested steam turbines . Most recently he was an engineer in sales.
He wrote his first science fiction story, inspired by Hugo Gernsback's SF magazine Amazing Stories, and sent it in. The Golden Girl of Munan appeared there in the June 1928 issue. Encouraged by this success, he became a prolific and popular writer of Amazing Stories and other magazines, where his technical and scientific background proved helpful. Bleiler assessed Vincent's SF stories as “of varying quality, […] always intelligent, but often with traces of hasty work. Apparently, he often wrote with the market. "After 1940 did not write Vinent more, not until he was 73 years old the novel was published in The Doomsday Planet (1966) and several short stories, including Invader (1967) as The intruder appeared in 1979 in German translation.
Even after he stopped writing, Vincent remained interested in science fiction. The couple often spent the winters in California, and Vincent became a member of the SF Fandom there , joined the Count Dracula Society and the Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society , and attended conventions .
Vincent had a son and a daughter from his marriage to Ruth Hoff. A heavy smoker all his life, he died in 1968 at the age of 75 from complications from emphysema .
