Eddings' first books were novels with general subjects like Die Zeit der Jäger ( Bastei Lübbe Verlag ) and sold only moderately. He only made his breakthrough after he switched to the genre of adventure or fantasy (also: epic fantasy ).

His main work is the Belgariad saga , which is followed by the Malloreon saga . The Belgariad saga was published a few years earlier by Knaur Verlag as Das Auge Aldur and has been re-published by Lübbe Verlag after the success of the Malloreon saga .

In addition, the two books Belgarath the Sorcerer ( Belgarath the Sorcerer ) and Polgara the Sorceress ( Polgara the Sorceress ) appeared, which describe the life of Belgarath and his daughter Polgara from the beginning to the time of the beginning of the Belgariad saga . They are in the form of autobiographies of the two, written after the events of the Mallorean saga . The book The Riva Codex was published as the conclusion of the Belgariad and Malloreon sagas . which contains the origins of the sagas, comments by the author on the two sagas and additional literature such as the book of Alorn .

In addition, David Eddings has also published the works of the Elenium trilogy and the subsequent Tamuli trilogy . These two legends encompass the story of "Ritter Sperber" and his companions. Similar to the Belgariad and Malloreon sagas , this is also epic fantasy, but with large borrowings from medieval knight stories, such as the Arthurian saga . Eddings also wrote the novel Althalus. which is also set in a fantasy world and is strongly based on the Elenium saga , but is an independent book.

His last tetralogy Götterkinder ( The Dreamers ), written together with his wife Leigh, is now completely available in German.
