Circle of Friends for the Promotion of Literary and Scientific Translations

The Circle of Friends for the Promotion of Literary and Scientific Translations is a not-for-profit, registered association that aims to promote the work of literary translators . It awards grants to translators and recognizes special translation achievements. In 1998 he was the initiator of the Baden-Württemberg Translators' Days . The Freundeskreis is financed through donations and public grants.

history

The Circle of Friends was founded on April 13, 1966 in Stuttgart by the translator Helmut M. Braem . 1977–1993 it was directed by Hildegard Grosche , 1993–2001 by Rosemarie Tietze , 2001–2008 by Ragni Maria Gschwend , 2008–2014 by Susanne Höbel, 2014–2019 by Helga Pfetsch . Karen Nölle has been President of the Freundeskreis since 2019.

Helmut M. Braem Translator Award

Since 1978, the Helmut M. Braem Translator Award has been awarded every second year after a public invitation to tender for the outstanding rendering of a prose work. The prize money of 12,000 euros (as of 2020) is financed by the Freundeskreis through donations.

Christoph Martin Wieland Translator Award

Since 1979, every second year after a public invitation to tender, this prize has been awarded to an outstanding transmission in a variety of genres (novel, poetry, radio play, essay, etc.). The prize money of 12,000 € is provided by the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts Baden-Württemberg .

Scholarships

Perewest Scholarship

In addition to the prizes mentioned, the Freundeskreis annually awards a "Perewest Scholarship" to literary translators who translate works from Slavic languages into German for work or travel purposes. The grant, financed by the Perewest Foundation, honors translators who are working on a high-quality translation at the time of the advertisement and who can present a publishing contract for this project.

Scholarships for people from Baden-Württemberg

Literary translators residing in Baden-Württemberg can apply to the Freundeskreis for work grants once a year in spring. They are financed by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry for Science, Research and Art.

Despite the similarity of names, there is no direct organizational connection with the Association of German-Language Translators of Literary and Scientific Works . However, both clubs cooperate, e.g. B. through mutual public notices. In terms of personnel, many members are active in both associations.
