Doreen Daume (born July 20, 1957 in Dortmund ; † May 2, 2013 in Vienna ) was a German translator of Polish literature. She also published her own texts.

Life

Doreen Daume was born in Dortmund as the daughter of Rose (marie) and Willi Daume and lived with her family for a while as a child in the Villa Waldberta in Feldafing on Lake Starnberg, where she received a scholarship much later (2001). In the 1970s she moved to Vienna, where she studied piano and music education at the Vienna Conservatory and Music University , followed by Polish and English at the Institute for Translation and Interpreter Training at the University of Vienna . Since 1999 she has been translating Polish literature into German, both poetry ( Czesław Miłosz , Ewa Lipska , Piotr Sommer, Eugeniusz Tkaczyszyn-Dycki ) and prose ( Marek Krajewski , Olga Tokarczuk , Sławomir Mrożek ) and dramas ( Michał Kochanczak ), Marekczak . Thanks to her exemplary transmissions of high linguistic sensitivity, Doreen Daume was widely recognized by literary critics and also by the readership. Her new translations by Bruno Schulz ( Die Zimtläden and Das Sanatorium zur Houruhr ) received a lot of attention . In 2008 she received the Austrian State Prize for Literary Translation . She also published her own texts (essays, reviews, stories, etc.) for literary magazines and anthologies and took part in numerous international literary festivals and translator meetings.
