from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Erwin Köstler (* 1964 in Trier , Rhineland-Palatinate ) is an Austrian translator of Slovenian literature and a freelance literary scholar .

life and work

Köstler studied medicine and Slovenian studies at the University of Vienna . While still a student, he began working as a translator and freelance scientist. He became known to a wider public through his translations from the work of Ivan Cankar ; since 1994 he has been responsible for an edition of the work in annotated individual volumes (mostly first translations), which is published by Drava Verlag in Klagenfurt . The first complete and annotated transmission of the Integrali by Srečko Kosovel (1999) emerged from his preoccupation with classics of Slovenian literature . He also edited Slavko Grum's collected prose in German (2006). Köstler is the initiator and publisher of the Slovene Library book series , a joint project of the Drava, Wieser and Hermagoras publishers , which encompasses Slovenian prose from the 19th and 20th centuries and started publishing the first five volumes in 2013. Köstler also translated Carinthian-Slovenian authors for Drava ( Prežihov Voranc , Lipej Kolenik , Jože Blajs , Milka Hartman ). His translational work encompasses all literary genres and a broad spectrum of time, but since the turn of the millennium the focus has been on contemporary Slovenian prose . The authors he has translated include Franjo Frančič , Sebastijan Pregelj , Andrej E. Skubic and Breda Smolnikar .

Erwin Köstler complements his translation work with scientific work. In 2002 he graduated with an editorial work on Srečko Kosovels Integrali (cf. Vom Erleben und Deuten 2005), the following year he received his doctorate with a thesis on the history of the translation of Slovene literature into German (cf. Vom Kultlosen Volk zur Europäische Avantgarde 2006). From 2002 to 2004 he worked on the research project Literature and Resistance at the Institute for General and Comparative Literature at the University of Klagenfurt (together with Andrej Leben ). He published critical articles on Cankar research in Slovenian specialist journals and participated in numerous international symposia. From 2010 to 2011 he was co-editor of a three-part Zwischenwelt series on the subject of exile in Yugoslavia (together with Gabriele Anderl) . In the 2015 summer semester he was a guest lecturer at the Institute for Slavic Studies at the University of Graz . Since March 2016, Köstler has been working on the FWF project Bilingual literary practice of the Carinthian Slovenes after 1991 .

In 1999, Köstler received the Austrian State Prize for Literary Translators, Translatio 2000 , and in 2010 the Lavrin Diploma ( Lavrinova diploma ), an award given annually by the Association of Slovenian Translators for special merits in the field of conveying Slovenian literature abroad. He was awarded the Fabjan Hafner Prize in 2020 for his translation of the novel Chronos harvests by Mojca Kumerdej. Köstler lives in Vienna and is a member of the translators interest group .
