Traugott König (born September 22, 1934 in Bunzlau ; † July 9, 1991 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German translator .

Life

Traugott König was the son of a pastor . He attended a grammar school in the GDR and later studied Romance languages and philosophy at the Free University of Berlin . From 1970 he lived in Frankfurt am Main .

Traugott König has been translating literary and philosophical texts from French since the 1960s . He was the editor of the German complete edition of the works of Jean-Paul Sartre , in the context of which King's major works, the translations of Sartre's The Idiot of the Family and The Being and Nothing were published. In 1978, Traugott König received the Helmut M. Braem Translator Award for his Sartre translations and in 1988 the Johann Heinrich Voss Award of the German Academy for Language and Poetry in Darmstadt .
