Heinz Riedt

Heinz Riedt (* 1919 ; † 1997 in Procida , Italy ) was a German Italianist , partisan and translator .

Life

Heinz Riedt was able to escape the Wehrmacht in World War II by convincing a military doctor of his unfit for service in 1941. A short time later he moved to Padua , where he enrolled as a student of Italian studies at the local university and devoted himself to his specialty, the works of Carlo Goldoni . In 1943 he joined the partisan group around Otello Pighinan , closely related to Giustizia e Libertà , where he collected information and prepared prisoner exchanges under the code name Marino. He always kept the appearance of being a student in Padua. He escaped the SS because he was known to them only by an alias.

After the war he returned to Germany and lived in Munich. In the 1990s he moved to the Italian island of Procida , where he died in 1997. He described himself as an "unusual German": he was not a nationalist. He took his commitment to the partisans for granted.

Since returning from Italy he has worked as a translator from Italian. He translated Primo Levi , with whom he had a personal friendship. He also transferred works by Carlo Goldoni , Alessandro Manzoni , Luigi Pirandello , Carlo Emilio Gadda , Italo Calvino , Tommaso Landolfi and others.
