Italian Studies

In the German-speaking countries, Italian studies is traditionally understood as the part of Romance studies that deals with the philology of the Italian language , culture , history and literature of Italy .

In 1940, as contractually agreed with the Italian government, Italian studies should become a separate subject, and the first German Italian studies chair was created at the University of Cologne . However, this was not filled by the end of the war because no suitable applicant could be found. Hans Sckommodau, for example, had shown too great weaknesses in Italian.

German Italianist Day

University professors, young academics and teachers meet every year at the German Italian Day. Italianists from Germany, Italy, Austria and Switzerland are included. In addition to research and teaching of the Italian language, the literature and culture of Italy are also the subject of the lectures, each of which has a main topic; that of the German Italianist Day 2008 in Marburg z. B. was "Inquietudini" (restlessness).
