Ziemowit Cyprian Szczerek (born April 10, 1978 in Radom ) is a Polish writer , translator and journalist .

Ziemowit Szczerek was born as the son of the engineer and current professor of tribology Marian Szczerek , initially studied law and then completed postgraduate studies in political science at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow . As a result, he began to publish in various political science magazines and newspapers, mainly in Krakow, including in Nowa Europa Wschodnia , in the English-language version New Eastern Europe , Polityka as well as in Gazeta Wyborcza and in Tygodnik Powszechny . Further articles appeared on websites such as interia.pl in Poland and later on Zbrucz.eu and Zaxid.net in Ukraine. Szczerek has also been running various blogs for a long time. With the start of his literary publications, Szczerek began to participate in literary festivals and book fairs in Poland and Ukraine.

Szczerek found his own way and breakthrough after he published the basic text of the so-called gonzo journalism by Hunter S. Thompson , The Kentucky Derby Is Decadent and Depraved from 1970 2013 in the Krakow art and culture magazine Ha! Art in Polish would have. This form of ultra-subjective ironic representation, which initially makes the reader agree with the observations and evaluations, but then provokes doubts and reflection, Szczerek took up in order to put an end to widespread Western prejudices and stereotypes about Eastern Europe as the "Wild East". As his first gonzo novel, the novel “Mordor comes and eats us up or a secret story of the Slavs” was published in spring 2013. The Ukrainian writer Andrij Bondar immediately translated the fictional travel report across Ukraine into Ukrainian, followed by a Hungarian translation in 2016 and finally a German translation in 2017. Continuing the Ukrainian theme, Szczerek published the volume "Tattoo mit Dreizack ( Trysub )" in 2015 , in which he targets the stereotypes about Ukrainian nationalism. In alternation to the Ukrainian topic, to which he feels connected like many Poles whose families were expelled or resettled from Eastern Galicia after the Second World War , he devoted himself to the absurdities of Polish life in three further books: "The won republic" (2013 ), which offers an alternative representation of Poland's history from the Second World War to the present day, “Sieben” (2014, German 2019), which follows the Polish motorway from Krakow to Warsaw, and most recently “Intermarium” (2017), where it straddles between St Petersburg and Istanbul , the Donbass and the island of Ruegen . His debut, however, was the short story volume "Ein Päckchen Radomer" (2010), which he wrote together with Marcin Kępa. As the literary grandson of Kakan satire authors such as Ephraim Kishon or Gregor von Rezzori, Szczerek does away with the ignorant-arrogant Western perspectives, clever, poetic, stunningly funny and brilliantly entertaining; this is where its enlightening and literary significance lies.
