Piero Rismondo

Piero Rismondo (born February 15, 1905 in Trieste , † February 9, 1989 in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee ) was a writer, theater director, director and journalist.

Life

Piero's parents were Karoline Flohr and Antonio Rismondo, owners and general director of the Austrian steamship company “Navigatione Fratelli Rismondo”, which later became the shipping company “Dalmatia”. Piero grew up in Vienna and began his journalistic career in the 1920s.

Rismondo's piece “Grillparzer. Five old ones from an Austrian drama ”(new version in 1947 under the title“ Der Herr Hofrat. Five acts from the life of Grillparzer ”) was shown in 1936 in the theater“ Die Komödie ”in Johannesgasse (later the“ Insel ”, today's Metro-Kino ) premiered with actors from the Volkstheater , which Rismondo had written with the intention of giving a kind of Austrian diagram in a time of growing threat to Austria from National Socialism using the example of some stations in the life of the Austrian poet Franz Grillparzers . This is also indicated by the original subtitle, “… from an Austrian drama”. With this in mind, some figures were synthesized into symbols (the baron , the councilor ) and some anachronisms were deliberately constructed.

From 1938 Rismondo lived in emigration , from 1945 to 1952 he was acting director and director of the Teatro Verdi in Fiume ( Rijeka ), Croatia , and from 1952 he lived again in Vienna.

Rismondo was considered an “ anti-fascist from the very beginning”, “ Old Austrians ”, “ doyen of Viennese theater critics”. "Piero, il Grande" was called Piero Rismondo in the press , of which he was cultural editor and head of the cultural department from 1954 to 1978. From 1954 to 1961 he was a culture and literary editor there, from 1961 to 1970 a theater critic and columnist . Until his death in 1989, Rismondo wrote theater reviews for the theater magazine Die Bühne . The last review appeared at the premiere of Heldenplatz by Thomas Bernhard .

Rismondo was the perfect translator of Italo Svevo , whom he made known in the German-speaking world, as well as of Luigi Pirandello , Alberto Moravia and Carlo Goldoni .
