The stage (since 1982 stage ) is the largest Austrian theater and culture magazine .

history

The magazine appeared for the first time on November 6, 1924 as a newspaper for theater, literature, film, fashion, art, society and sport in Kronos-Verlag of the tabloid Die Hour published by Imre Békessy . It was presented in a modern and audience-friendly way, took an offensive against growing anti-Semitism, liked to show revealing pictures of slightly aproned girls and dancers, but also reported extensively on the Vienna Women's Academy and exhibitions of “women's art”. The first editor-in-chief was Hans Liebstöckl , followed by Josef C. Wirth . The staff included, among others, Fred Heller , Gretl Müller (as head of fashion editorial), Liesl Weil and Erni Kniepert as illustrators. In the confrontation between Adolf Loos and the Wiener Werkstätte , the paper took a stand for the latter. In 1926, with the takeover of Kronos-Verlags AG, Die Bühne became part of Vernay Verlag . By the time Austria was annexed in 1938, 468 issues had appeared. Immediately afterwards, in March 1938, the " Aryanization " took place, and Raimund Haintz was appointed as the new editor-in-chief. During the Nazi regime , the sheet was called Wiener Bühne . Authors such as Franz Nabl and Erhard Buschbeck published here - in 1943 it was discontinued due to the war.

Current situation

Until 2020, the magazine was published by the Wiener Bühnenverein and VGN Medien Holding GmbH .

  • Topics: theater and music theater, festivals, visual arts, film

The stage reports regularly and in some cases exclusively on current productions from Austria's most important theaters , including the Vienna State Opera , Burgtheater , Akademietheater , Theater in der Josefstadt , Theater der Jugend , Vereinigte Bühnen Wien , Landestheater Niederösterreich, Landestheater Linz. In the magazine you will find advance announcements, background information and interviews as well as many pictures, but no reviews or follow-up reports. The focus of the reporting is on Vienna , Lower Austria and Upper Austria , but important cultural dates and festivals in the federal states are taken into account. The magazine also reports on the Wiener Festwochen and the Salzburg Festival . Since January 2008 international theater and opera events have also been taken into account in the form of reviews. In addition, the range of topics was expanded to include jazz, film and one main topic per issue.

The stage is available in stores; its circulation, which is very high for a cultural magazine , is achieved through sales in combination with theater subscriptions. Although paid, the stage can still be seen as an early example of relationship marketing in the cultural sector. Due to the editorial quality, it also fulfills the function of a trade journal for Austria .

In 2020, the Red Bull Media House magazine was taken over by the NEWS publishing group (VGN). Atha Athanasiadis is the editor-in-chief. The magazine's new authors include Deputy Editor-in-Chief Michael Hufnagl, Angelika Hager , Guido Tartarotti and Christoph Wagner-Trenkwitz . The stage will appear ten times a year in future, the first edition will have a print run of 65,000 copies.
