Gysbert Japicxpriis

The Gysbert Japicxpriis (Gysbert Japicx Prize), named after the Frisian writer Gysbert Japicx , is a Frisian literary prize awarded by the administration of the province of Friesland in the Netherlands . The provincial administration follows the recommendations of an expert committee.

The prize consists of a certificate and a sum of 5,000 euros . It was launched in 1947 and awarded every three years (every year until 1953, every two years until 1983). Since 1983 prose and poetry works have been honored on a regular basis.

Scandals about the Gysbert Japicxpriis

  • In 1950 the Advisory Committee proposed that the award be divided between Ype Poortinga and Anne Wadman. However, the provincial administration only honored Mr. Poortinga.
  • In 1951, the awardee Jan Dijkstra did not appear at the award ceremony.
  • In 1953, the award of Rixt's erotic poetry collection led to protests.
  • In 1959 Eeltsje Boates Folkertsma refused the award.
  • In 1961 Marten Brouwer resigned from the advisory committee because of quarrels.
  • In 1969 the advisory committee presented the poets' community 'Operaesje Fers' as the winner. The provincial administration considered this lecture to be unlawful and decided not to give an award this year.
  • In 1975 the award winner Rink van der Velde did not appear at the award ceremony.
  • In 1977 the advisory committee did not come to a recommendation. The provincial administration awarded Jan Wybenga with a prize.
  • In 2003, Provincial Mayor Bertus Mulder criticized the Advisory Committee for having presented Willem Tjerkstra, while he himself considered Durk van der Ploeg a more worthy laureate. Nevertheless, Mr. Tjerkstra was awarded this year's prize.
