Álvaro Mutis Jaramillo (born August 25, 1923 in Bogotá , † September 22, 2013 in Mexico City ) was a Colombian writer .

Life

The diplomat's son Mutis spent part of his childhood in Brussels . Since 1956 he lived in Mexico City. Mutis has written poetry since the 1940s and novels since the 1960s. In large parts of his work, the figure of the navigator Maqroll der Gaviero (the Mars guest ) appears again and again , for the first time in the poem Los elementos del desastre (The elements of misfortune) published in 1953 . Later there were a total of seven novels about the character. The first five volumes appeared in German from 1989 to 1995 by Elster-Verlag and Suhrkamp Verlag , the last two only in the German complete edition in one volume: Die Abenteuer und Irrfahrten des Gaviero Maqroll . The last volume takes on the real people Alejandro Obregón and Gabriel Garcia Márquez in the story.
