Kit Wright

Kit Wright (born June 17, 1944 in Crockham Hill , Kent ) is a British poet and author of children's books who was awarded both the Hawthornden Prize and the Cholmondeley Award .

Life

After attending school, Wright studied at the University of Oxford and was a lecturer in Canada after completing his studies , before he was an educational assistant at the Poetry Society in London on his return from 1970 to 1975 . In 1975 he edited the volume of poetry Soundings: A Selection of Poems for Reading Aloud and published his first book, The Bear Looked Over the Mountain, in 1977, which received both the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize and the Alice Hunt Bartlett Award . He then was a lecturer in creative writing at the University of Cambridge from 1977 to 1979 .

In 1985 he was also honored with the Arts Council Writers' Award and published his book Short Afternoons in 1989 , for which he was awarded both the Hawthornden Prize and the Heinemann Award. A collection of the lyric works of Wright, who also received the Cholmondeley Award in 1995, are included in the poetry collection Hoping It Might Be So: Poems 1974-2000 (2000). The Magic Box: Poems for Children (2009) was most recently published by the London- based author .

Wright's poems are sometimes reserved, but sometimes also full of emotion. His most famous poems include "Hoping It Might Be So", "Sonnet for Dick", "How the Wild South East Was Lost", "Ode to Didcot Power Station" and, for children, "Red Boots On" and "The Magic Box" .
