Anne Tyler
Anne Tyler (born October 25, 1941 in Minneapolis , Minnesota ) is an American writer .
life and work
Tyler grew up in North Carolina and studied Slavic Studies at Duke and Columbia University . Since 1965 she has mainly published novels that thematize the fate of various protagonists in changing perspectives from narrative closeness to psychological distant views. Works like The Journeys of Mr. Leary were made into films (in this case by Lawrence Kasdan ). In 1989 she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for the novel breathing exercises . The critics agreed that Dinner in the Heimweh-Restaurant was their most successful and best book to date. In 1983 she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters and in 1994 to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
In 2015, her book A Spool of Blue Thread was on the top list for the Man Booker Prize .
Tyler has a broad readership and writers, such as John Updike and Nick Hornby .
Private
Tyler met the Iranian child psychologist Taghi Modarressi (1931-1997) at Duke University , who had left Iran in 1959. In 1963 they married. There are two daughters from this marriage. Her daughter Mitra Modarressi is an illustrator of children's books.
Tyler has lived in Baltimore since 1967 , where many of her novels are set.
Influences and quotes
In one of her rare interviews with the New York Times, she named Eudora Welty as a major literary influence:
"Reading Eudora Welty when I was growing up showed me that very small things are often really larger than the large things."
"Reading Eudora Welty as a child showed me that very small things are in reality often bigger than big things."
Anne Tyler said of her 1992 novel Sailing with the Stars ( Celestial Navigation ) that this was her toughest novel to date, and a favorite to date:
"Creating Jeremy was a way to examine my own tendency to turn more and more inward [as I write]."
In the book, Tyler described a facet of himself in the character of Miss Vinton, whose favorite dream is:
"I read a book alone in my room and no one ever interrupts me."
Elsewhere, she sees Dinner in the Homesick Restaurant ( Dinner at the Homesick Restauran ) as her best novel:
"It's the novel that came closest to what I imagined at the beginning."
reception
British author Nick Hornby wrote of Tyler:
“I started reading Anne Tyler's books in the 1980s. Little did I know before that novelists were allowed to do what Tyler did - to write about family life with mind, humor, and heart. Anne Tyler changed my life. "
