In 1997 she developed breast cancer and has since supported the work of the breast cancer initiative. In addition, she is involved in the advice center for people with eating disorders “Dick & Dünn e. V. ". Her hobbies include running and swimming. Gesine Strempel lives in Berlin and lives in a relationship.

Strempel began in 1967 as a permanent employee, later as a freelance writer, presenter and reporter for the women's political program Zeite at the cultural radio of the SFB (later RBB). In 1973 she attended the international women's film seminar in Berlin and was committed to establishing the seminar in other cities as well. In addition, she began her work at the Berlin women's group “Bread & Roses” and, according to Helke Sander, worked on one

“Book that for the first time dealt critically with the consequences of hormonal contraception and also criticized the women's movement for some of its demands, e. For example, to ask for the pill on a sick note, because the other side of the pill was also seen, namely that healthy young women swallow a drug that has not been particularly researched in order to be able to sleep with a man without consequences. "

In 1974, Helke Sander founded the feminist film magazine Frauen und Film , in which Gesine Strempel worked for at least ten hours a week for free. The magazine called for so-called “gender parity” in committees and juries. According to Helke Sanders, the accompanying leaflet was there

“For the first time in 1975 at the Berlinale at the famous filmmaker's breakfasts in Gesine's apartment and was violently attacked and laughed at by many colleagues at the time. One effect of this demand for gender parity at the time was that Gesine was appointed to the committee of the FFA, the film funding agency, by a few men who supported us, where she was - more or less initially as the only woman and all these years in the extreme minority, ten years For a long time, she tried to make her jury colleagues aware of what was new, interesting and worthy of funding by women. In this way, she has contributed to the fact that little by little a few filmmakers could even think about being considered for funds from institutions and submitting their material to the FFA. "

In a conversation between Helke Sander and Gesinde Strempel about the magazine Frauen und Film around 1980, Gesine Strempel stated:

“I would say that then as now we were an active part of the women's movement, even if we never went to the women's center or were never really accepted by the women's movement […] The women's movement said we were too special why one Newspaper about film. Back then there wasn’t even “Courage” or “Emma” […] We didn’t fight the whole world with it either, but we had, or I discovered new possibilities in myself. That's why I did it and not because I wanted to prove it to the world. "

Gesine Strempel acted in five films from 1975 to 1983. She has also been a translator for American literature since 1975.

Gesine Strempel has been learning Hebrew since around 1999, frequently flies to Israel and reports on the German-Israeli relationship , with particular attention to the situation of women. In cooperation with the association “Ta Tzitzikia e. V. ”, who is committed to the“ planning, promotion and implementation of political, cultural and social projects ”, she moderated the presentation of the book What I always wanted to say to the Jews, on which she was involved.

In December 2003 Halina Bendkowski , Günter Langer and Helke Sander published an open letter to the then integration commissioner Marieluise Beck, the minister for women Renate Schmidt and the minister of justice Brigitte Zypries in response to the so-called "headscarf debate". Gesine Strempel signed this letter as 85. She commented on Federal Minister Ursula von der Leyen's “Alliance for Education” and other scandals, such as the prostitute cocaine scandals by Michel Friedman and Jörg Immendorff .

In September 2011, the 23rd literary marathon took place at the Kunstfabrik Schlot in Berlin, during which Gesine Strempel read from Kathrine Switzer's book Marathon Woman , which she translated.
