Frauen und Film is a feminist film magazine . It is considered the most important German-speaking forum for the discussion of feminist film theory .

The magazine was founded in 1974 by the director Helke Sander in Berlin and was published by Rotbuch Verlag until 1982 . The establishment was preceded by the 1st International Women's Film Seminar in 1973 in the Arsenal (cinema) , conceived and organized by Helke Sander and Claudia von Alemann . In 1983 the cinema philosopher Heide Schlüpmann and film curator Karola Gramann took over the editorial office of the magazine and the editorial office was relocated to Frankfurt am Main .

Since moving to Frankfurt, Frauen und Film has been published by Verlag Stroemfeld / Roter Stern (Frankfurt am Main), at times every six months. A total of 68 issues have been published since the beginning. Since the late 1980s, the individual small-format issues of the magazine have often been 150 pages and more. After a long break, Frauen und Film was released again in September 2011 on the subject of “ Sexuality in Film”. The current issue is from 2015 and has the topic “68 Awakening. Women directors of the 60s ”.

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the magazine, the publisher issued a CD-ROM together with issue 62 with an extensive digital index for all issues published up to then, which enables a search in the issues for locations of articles by all authors, personal names in general as well the mentioned film titles.
