action

Edda Chiemnyjewski works as a freelance press photographer in West Berlin. With the income she can hardly provide for herself and her daughter, so she often works until late at night. She also has to look after the household and take care of her daughter's needs. She tries as best she can to preserve her private life and at the same time to find fulfillment in her job. She can hardly follow the daily rhythm that she has imposed on herself, instead the structures become blurred. Edda tries to reduce her obligations, only to pursue some important strands of life and to drop others. In a new project, she is supposed to capture her image of the city with other women. The photos should be attached to advertising space and promote tourism. The women, however, provide their own picture in order to critically point out neglected aspects. They soon reach their personal and political limits; the donors are dissatisfied. Now women have to come up with lists, get their own way, tackle conflicts. They are not used to tactics in the world of men.

criticism

The film service judges that the first feature-length film by Helke Sander is reminiscent of Alexander Kluge “in its combination of fiction and documentarism, in its essayistic reasoning and in its dry self-irony ”, but “expanded by a feminist perspective that makes the film a successful and important one Document of female awareness ”.
