Courage (title addition Berliner Frauenzeitung , changed in 1978 to current Frauenzeitung ) was a feminist magazine thatappearedin West Berlin from 1976 to 1984.

The self-administered autonomous courage was seen as a mouthpiece and communication platform for the autonomous left-feminist scene in the Federal Republic of Germany and Berlin, saw itself as a political, left-wing alternative to Emma and thus played a special role in the West German women's movement of those years. She took up topics that were considered extremely sensitive in the social climate of the time, and encouraged the women addressed to lead a self-determined life. In addition to current political issues, the magazine also dealt with topics such as domestic violence , rape , prostitution and healthand sexuality as well as international issues such as clitoral circumcision in Africa.

The magazine's zero number appeared on June 17, 1976. From its first regular issue in September 1976 to the March 1984 issue, the Courage appeared almost exclusively monthly and had a circulation of up to 70,000 copies. Sibylle Plogstedt , Sabine Zurmühl , Barbara Duden , Christa (Chrille) Müller and Monika Schmid were among the founders . The editorial collective also wanted to reach women outside the women's movement, so the magazine should not only be offered in women's centers and women's bookshops, but also in kiosks. Due to internal conflicts and financial problems, the magazine was discontinued in 1984.

The title Courage (French: courage ) refers to the main character of Grimmelshausen's novel Trutz Simplex or the biography of the Ertz cheater and land troublemaker Courasche "as a symbol of the militantly independent woman".
