Jiří Šotola

Jiří Šotola (born May 28, 1924 in Smidar ; † August 8, 1989 in Prague ) was a Czech poet, writer and dramaturge who became known for his historical novels.

Life

After graduating from high school, he was employed in labor service in Germany . After the war, he studied dramaturgy and at the DAMU acting school . He later went on to study philosophy .

Together with Miroslav Florian , Karel Šiktanc and others, he was one of the everyday poets, most of whom published in the magazine Mai (Květen). This group of poets wanted to move away from pathetic poetry towards reality. From 1958 until the magazine was closed, he was editor-in-chief. He then worked for culture (Kultura) and literary newspaper (Literární noviny). From 1964 to 1967 he was also secretary of the Union of Czech Writers . After 1968 he was forbidden to publish any further. A few years later he practiced so-called "self-criticism". He was then allowed to perform again in public. As an actor and director he worked in Königgrätz . His grave is in the Janovičky cemetery .

Works

His main subject was incidents of war. He uses short words and concise dialogues in his books. His stories are often full of irony and anarchy. He started with poetry, later wrote historical novels and plays. He also wrote literary criticism and poetry statements for textbooks. He translated works by Boris Pasternak and Boris Sluckij .

The stories take place in the lands near Košumberk . The focus of the story is Countess Marie Maximiliána Slavatovna, a humble widow who bequeathed her fortune to the Jesuit order .
