Bill Keller (born January 18, 1949 in Palo Alto , California ) is an American journalist . He was editor-in-chief of the New York Times from 2003 to 2011 .

Life

Keller attended Junipero Serra High School in San Mateo . While at Pomona College , he began his journalism career by founding The Collage newspaper . After graduating from college, he became a reporter in Portland , Oregon for The Portland Oregonian in 1970 . In 1980 he went to the Congressional Quarterly Weekly Report in Washington, DC and then to the Dallas Times Herald .

He joined the New York Times in 1984 and worked for them in Washington. In 1986 he became a reporter in Moscow and in 1988 he became head of the office there. In 1989 he received the Pulitzer Prize for his reports from the Soviet Union . In 1992 he became the head of the newspaper in Johannesburg and remained so until 1995. In 1995 he became a foreign editor and in 1997 a managing editor . He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Advanced Management Program in 2000. In 2001 he became a columnist and senior writer . From July 2003 he was editor-in-chief of the New York Times.

On July 6, 2005, he defended Judith Miller in the case of the Plame affair .

At the beginning of July 2011, Keller announced his resignation on September 6, 2011; Successor was Jill Abramson . Keller continues to work for the company, including writing for the New York Times Magazine . Today (as of 2016) Keller is the editor-in-chief of the Marshall Project , a non-profit organization for journalism about criminal justice.
