Dag Solstad

Dag Solstad (born July 16, 1941 in Sandefjord ) is one of the most important contemporary authors from Norway .

General

Dag Solstad has already published around 30 books in his home country, including - together with the writer Jon Michelet - five books on football world championships. Dag Solstad lives in Berlin.

In German is u. a. the book Eleventh Roman, Eighteenth Book (2004) published by Dörlemann Verlag in Zurich . The novel was originally published in 1992 and represents a turning point in Solstad's oeuvre. Before that, he was a member of the Maoist Arbeidernes kommunistparti as a political author; During this time he wrote novels about the working class in the style of social realistic literature. With the decline of the student-dominated Maoist movement at the end of the 1970s, the focus of his work changed - now the focus is on the individual, no longer society as such. It is therefore not surprising that the eleventh novel, eighteenth book and not an earlier book was first translated into German, because the social background of Norway no longer plays an important role here and the content can be read generally and there are no reservations about Solstad's political past can arise.

During a reading in the Literaturhaus Zürich (September 27, 2004), Solstad said that since then he has no longer been able to write politically. He tried - in vain. He lacks hope for change.

Solstad's books sometimes have idiosyncratic titles, one of which bears his date of birth. According to Solstad, his publishing house never relieved him of the task of looking for a title. In the case of the Eleventh Novel, Eighteenth Book, he had different titles to choose from, but the focus was always on one aspect, so that other aspects were neglected. After all, in this case he was inspired by music, where you know how to number your own works. In 2005 Solstad's novel Professor Andersen's Night was published in German translation by Dörlemann Verlag, further translations of other Solstad books followed.

On June 17th, 2011, on the occasion of his 70th birthday, Dag Solstad was awarded a lifelong tax-free state pension of 200,000 kronor per year due to his role in Norwegian literature.

Contents Eleventh novel, eighteenth book

In the eleventh novel, eighteenth book , the focus is on the figure of the intellectual Björn Hansen. He leaves his wife and son (2) to follow his lover Turid Lammers from Oslo to the provinces. After 14 years and after the passion for Turid has long since cooled down, he separates from her and comes up with a crazy plan to finally say no to social life, which seems increasingly banal and superficial to him and which has nothing to counter his existential boredom . Before he can put this plan into practice, however, his grown-up son moves in with him temporarily to begin training as an optician in Kongsberg. But even being with him ends sobering. Father and son remain strangers.
