Bernd Schirmer

Bernd Schirmer (born February 23, 1940 in Leipzig ) is a German author and dramaturge .

The son of a teacher and a cook was born in Leipzig in 1940, but spent his childhood and youth in the Erzgebirge mountain town of Scheibenberg . After graduating from high school in 1958, he worked for two years in the National People's Army . From 1961 to 1965 Schirmer studied German and English at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig . He then worked as an audio dramaturge in Berlin until 1968 . From 1969 to 1972 he worked as a German lecturer at the University of Algiers and from 1973 to 1991 as a dramaturge for the German television network . Since then he has been a freelance writer. He is a member of the PEN Center Germany .

Schirmer lives in the Dahlwitz-Hoppegarten district of Waldesruh .
