Jack Ketchum (real name: Dallas Mayr; born November 10, 1946 in Livingston , New Jersey ; † January 24, 2018 in New York City , New York ) was an American writer . He has received the Bram Stoker Award several times and in 2011 the World Horror Convention Grand Master Award . In 2010, Die Schwestern was awarded the Vincent Prize for “Best International Literature” .

Life

Ketchum attended Emerson College and, as a young man, worked as a cook, actor and teacher, among other things. As a literary agent, Ketchum accompanied Henry Miller's last few years . A mentor to the young Jack Ketchum was Robert Bloch , the author of the novel Psycho .

Surname

Some of his early works still appeared under the pseudonym "Jerzy Livingston", based on his hometown.

The stage name Jack Ketchum is an allusion to the historic executioner Jack Ketch (died 1686). Since the characters in Ketchum's novels often come to a tragic end, the author's name as an executioner fits. In addition, the name can also be read as a play on words: "Jack, Catch 'em", ie "Jack, catch them".

Film career

His works The Lost , Evil , Red , Beutegier and The Woman were each filmed. Apart from The Woman , he took on a supporting role in the films under his real name Dallas Mayr.
