Lea Schneider (born July 9, 1989 in Cologne ) is a German writer and translator . She is best known for her poems, essays and translations of contemporary Chinese poetry.

Life

Schneider studied comparative literature , sinology , sociology and linguistics at the Free University of Berlin and the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt / Oder. She spent semesters abroad at Fudan University in Shanghai and Zhongguo Wenhua University in Taipei , where she first came into close contact with contemporary Chinese literature. She completed her studies in 2015 with a thesis on biopolitics and governmentality in China using the example of the “ leftover women ” phenomenon (chin. 剩 女 Pīnyīn: shèngnǚ) and has since worked as a freelance author, translator, editor and curator in Berlin.

In 2009 she and other poets founded the poetry collective G13 , a group of young authors who discuss and edit their poems in monthly feedback meetings, comparable to a text workshop. Since 2010 Schneider has been working as part of G13 on formats for collective writing (e.g. the jointly written long poem “das war intent”). She is also involved in the collective's various stage programs, in which possibilities are explored to stage poems as performances .

Create

In 2010 Schneider began to publish poems, essays and translations in various literary magazines and anthologies (including fiction , poet , edit , akzente , Lyrik von Jetzt 3 , Jahrbuch der Lyrik 2012 and 2017). She works closely with the publishing house in Berlin , where in 2014 her poetry debut “Invasion Rückwärts” was published. In the same year Schneider was awarded the Dresden Poetry Prize.

In 2015 Schneider curated a program focus on contemporary Chinese poetry for the Berlin Poetry Festival; since then she has increasingly appeared as a translator and mediator of Chinese poetry. The anthology “CHINABOX. New poetry from the People's Republic ”met with media coverage in 2016 and was awarded the “ Poetry Recommendation 2017 ”award by the German Academy for Language and Poetry . Also in 2016, Schneider was invited to the Goethe-Institut China in Nanjing as Writer-in-Residence and received a grant from the German Translation Fund for her work on “CHINABOX”.

Beyond her work with G13, Schneider is also interested in collaborative projects and working on the limits of different art forms and genres, e.g. B. with the e-book "O0", which she published in 2016 together with the writer Tillmann Severin and the sculptor Sebastian Severin .

In 2018, Schneider was awarded the Postpoetry.NRW Prize and the Poetry East West Translation Award. Her poems have been translated into English, Chinese, Russian, French, Slovenian and Czech.
