Open Mike

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Open Mike (spelling: open mike ) is an international German-language literary prize . Along with the Klagenfurt Ingeborg Bachmann Prize, it is the most important competition for new discoveries in German-language literature. Its name is derived from the English term for open stage (" open mic ").

Structures

The Open Mike has been awarded annually since 1993 by the Literaturwerkstatt Berlin in the prose and poetry categories. In contrast to the Bachmann Prize, the open mike is aimed exclusively at the next generation of literature. Only German-speaking authors who are not older than 35 and who have not yet published their own books can take part. As part of the international competition for young German-language prose and poetry sponsored by the Crespo Foundation , various colloquia and writing workshops take place in the framework program, in which finalists from previous years can participate free of charge.

Six editors from renowned publishers select a maximum of 22 finalists from the anonymized text submissions. They will be invited to the two-day public competition event in Berlin for a November weekend. Each participant has exactly 15 minutes for their reading. The jury, consisting of writers, selects up to three winners and awards prize money totaling 7,500 euros. One of them is reserved for poetry. There is also an audience award . This taz prize from the audience jury rewards the winner with a copy of his text in the taz . The Berlin public radio station Deutschlandfunk Kultur makes a recording and creates a feature about the open mike weekend and the winners. All final texts of the open mike will be published as anthologies by Allitera Verlag on the date of the competition . After the reading competition, all finalists can take part in a writing workshop where they can talk to successful authors and experienced publishers about their texts. The three winners can go on a reading tour to introduce themselves to a curious literary public in Frankfurt am Main , Vienna and Bern .

For the professional talent scouts in the book publishing industry , literary agents and literary critics , the open mike is meanwhile an annual must-attend event.
