Thomas von Steinaecker
Thomas Freiherr von Steinaecker (born February 6, 1977 in Traunstein ) is a German writer, TV director and journalist.
Life
Steinaecker studied literature at the University of Munich and the University of Cincinnati and received his doctorate in 2006 with a thesis on literary photo texts with Rolf Dieter Brinkmann , Alexander Kluge and WG Sebald . During his studies he worked as a freelancer for the magazines www.textem.de and Kultur & Gespenster . In 2007, Bayerischer Rundfunk broadcast its first radio play , My tapes are my resistance . In 2007 his debut novel Wallner begins to fly reached 3rd place on the SWR best list and was shortlisted for the German Book Prize . His fourth novel, The year in which I stopped worrying and began to dream , was nominated for the Leipzig Book Fair Prize in 2012 and was also on the SWR best list. In 2013 he was nominated for the Alfred Döblin Prize with a new dystopian novel project . In the 2013/14 winter semester he took on a poetics professorship at the RheinMain University of Applied Sciences . From 2014 to 2018 Thomas von Steinaecker was on the jury of the comic book award of the Berthold Leibinger Foundation. His film Richard Strauss and his heroines was awarded both the International Classical Music Award and an ECHO Klassik , his film "Leonard Bernstein - Das torn Genie" received the Golden Prague at the International Television Festival 2018. It also won the Manchester Film Festival in 2019 , Toronto International Film Festival and the Master of Arts in Sofia . In 2017 von Steinaecker dramatized "Who we were" for a one-time performance at the Staatstheater Darmstadt , the last text by Roger Willemsen , with whom he had already worked on his TV series Moving Republic of Germany . The actors were Barbara Auer and Joachim Król .
In February 2015 he initiated and supervised the "mosaic novel" Two Girls in War about the real case of two radicalized Austrian teenagers who joined IS (Islamic State). The internet project of the S. Fischer Verlag , on which nine authors contributed, was supposed to sound out the socio-political role of literature and received a wide media response. From autumn 2015 he will publish the web comic “The summer of her life” together with the illustrator Barbara Yelin , which was published in 2017 in an expanded form as a book. In 2016 his fifth novel, “The Defense of Paradise”, was nominated for the German Book Prize. The jury's justification for awarding the Carl Amery Literature Prize 2017 states: Thomas von Steinaecker's work uniquely combines the observation of the present in society and the possibility of literature thinking. His novels are experimental arrangements of the human, of the precarious relationship between the individual and the community, and at the same time an urgent plea for the proper rights of the imagination against the background of modern rationality. In 2018 the novel also received the Fantastik Prize from the city of Wetzlar . Together with the draftsman David von Bassewitz, von Steinaecker is working on a graphic novel about the composer Karlheinz Stockhausen , with whom he had a long friendship. His socio-political commitment was continued when, together with the University of Augsburg and the Sensemble Theater, in July 2018 he launched the interdisciplinary series "Augsburg Conversations on Literature and Engagement". a. Friedrich Christian Delius , Jonas Lüscher , Felicitas Hoppe , Clemens Meyer (writer) , Sharon Dodua Otoo , Simon Strauss and Ebow (rapper) participated.
Steinaecker writes comic reviews for the Süddeutsche Zeitung and the Neue Rundschau regularly publishes his essays on unfinished works of art. He has been a member of the PEN Center Germany since 2017 . The writer lives in Augsburg .
