Norbert Busè (born January 16, 1963 ) is a German documentary filmmaker , film producer and director .

Life

Norbert Busè grew up in Erbach in the Odenwald . In 1990 he won the main prize in the German Youth Video Prize competition. Until 1993 he worked as an editor at ZDF and was also shown as the presenter of the ZDF advice program KONTAKTE. He has been working on film projects since 1991. In addition, he dealt with questions of media education . In 1993 he moved to Berlin and made documentaries as well as some experimental short films . The focus of his work so far has been on topics of culture , especially music . His first film shot for ZDF, Auf Teufel komm raus , deals with the importance of music in young people's development using the example of the new wave scene. In 2003 Busè began to produce contributions for the six-part film project Masterpieces of Mankind together with UNESCO , ZDF and 3sat . The films showed examples of the intangible world cultural heritage in the field of music and the performing arts. The 90-minute music documentary AVA - My Mother's Voice, shot in Russia and Berlin, was his first full-length film about the legacy and possible loss of Russian folk songs . He produced the Arte Lounge in over thirty episodes , which for the first time showed classical musicians in a Berlin club on television. In 2010 he organized a choir festival in South Africa for the TV station ARTE. The highlight was the first appearance of all choirs with the freedom song Ukuthula . His films about musicians like Karlheinz Stockhausen, John Cage, Elvis Presley, Sergiu Celibidache and Richard Strauss have also attracted international attention. In addition, he was one of the few who visualized traditional stage dances from Russia, Bolivia, India, Malaysia and Cuba in the context of their lives for television in order to awaken a new understanding of dance. In 2009 he took over the management of the non-fiction department of Studio TV Film in Berlin.

Norbert Busè has received several awards for his work, including internationally. In 1999 he won the audience award of the Young collection # 13 of Filmbüros Bremen for his first short film Incubus . In 2004 he was awarded the MedienPREIS of the German Diabetes Foundation for his documentary The Prosperity Epidemic . In 2011 his production Arte Lounge was nominated for the Grimme Prize in the entertainment category. In 2012, The Show of Failure was nominated for the Grimme Prize in the entertainment category. In 2014 he was nominated for the International Classical Music Awards (ICMA) for his directorial work on the film Sergiu Celibidache - Head of Fire and Philosopher . In 2015, his production Richard Strauss and his Heroines won the International Classical Music Awards (ICMA) and the ECHO Klassik for the best DVD production of the year.

“The former ZDF editor and experienced filmmaker Norbert Busé is very familiar with the cultural history of the 20th century - which expressly includes popular culture as well as the high arts. In his extensive film work he has already portrayed the »greats« such as Stockhausen, John Cage and George Tabori, as well as the stars of the masses: Elvis Presley, the Chinese State Circus or just the Moving Republic of Germany. Quotes from newspaper articles (selection)

  • The song of silence , ZDF 1998: “As a television viewer, you could be taken into the silence if you wanted. For thirty minutes she lifted this report by Norbert Buse out of her viewing habits. For half an hour there were no flashy images, no clattering chains of information, no noisy judgment. Rare film cuts made the pulse beat faster. Time to think quietly. "
  • The player , ZDF 2000: "No frills and yet visually attractive, Norbert Buse describes the misery people find themselves who cannot handle gambling."
  • Mary Wigman - The Soul of Dance , Repetition ZDF / arte 2011 “Television documentaries rarely bring anything new to light, especially in areas beyond scandal. The authors Christof Debler and Norbert Buse have now succeeded in doing this with an almost one-hour article on a dance icon. "
  • Sergiu Celibidache - the essence of music , arte 2012: "It is the portrait of a conductor who, like no other, combined analysis and passion, ruthlessness and sympathy - a maestro furioso", Arte promotes the documentation. In the 55-minute film it becomes clear that Celibidache was an extraordinary musician and person, a positively obsessed person who always strived to perfect his art. "
  • It is the best attempt yet to explain who this mysterious, uncompromising, guru-like figure was, and why he had such an influence on those with whom he came into contact.
  • Moving Republic of Germany , 3sat 2014: "3sat lives up to its reputation as a cultural broadcaster with its review of German history and shows the role that artists played in the development of the Federal Republic."
  • From Dada to Gaga - 100 years of performance art , 3sat 2015: “Pop culture has learned a lot from performance art - but theater, fashion and literature are also influenced by it, as the three-part series is well documented. 'From Dada to Gaga' - despite the formally rather conventional design - worth seeing because it is an impressive reminder of the anarchic potential of this non-conformist anti-art. "
  • Heinrich Böll - Views of an Anarchist , 3sat 2017: “A writer's life in 45 minutes - the many books, poems and essays, the hostility and contradictions, the Nobel Prize for Literature, the dispute with the Church, his Christian faith and the hope of a new beginning for one whole nation. Can you tell that in under an hour? Norbert Busé succeeds in "Heinrich Böll - Views of an Anarchist" and much more. (...) Anarchists are dreamers, one hears Heinrich Böll, who would have turned hundred on December 21st, say at the end of the film. Who would have dared to dream that after such a long reception of his work and largely forgetting that such an essential film could be made about Böll. "
  • Effi Briest or the elasticity of the heart , 3sat 2019: “This documentary by Norbert Busè is enlightening with excerpts from the five film adaptations, recordings from the original locations and intelligent assessments. Furthermore, you can see a special kind of summit meeting: Fontane Effi Briest by Rainer Werner Fassbinders, whom the exceptional director often referred to as the work in which he was able to implement his artistic handwriting most independently and completely.
