The Russian-born writer Lena Gorelik (* 1981) follows Tolstoy's footsteps by traveling by train through Poland, Belarus and Russia to understand the most important stages in the life of the Russian poet. Your route ends at a small train station in what is now Lipetsk Oblast, where the writer died of pneumonia in 1910 at an old age. Surprisingly, the father of 13 legitimate children had left his wife at the age of 82 and fled not only from the family conflicts, but also from state reprisals, the press and his ruthless supporters. The film tells of the contradictions of a man who, both as a family man and as a Russian writer, united strong opposites. Revered like a saint by the Russian people, Tolstoy was on the one hand a hedonist and bon vivant, but on the other hand he was confronted with existential fears that extended to depression. Despite his noble origins, he sat down u. a. for the improvement of the living conditions of his farmers and for school reforms, but also almost plunged his family into misery because he wanted to forego the copyright of his works shortly before his death because of the fuss about himself he hated. The director of the Tolstoy Museum, Vitaly Remisow, and the contemporary author Vladimir Georgievich Sorokin guide the film as experts and Tolstoy connoisseurs. In addition to the Moscow wooden villa where Tolstoy lived, Lena Gorelik visits the old estate of the Tolstoy family, Yasnaya Polyana, among other things. 'Journey to Tolstoy' not only paints a picture of the poet and his life, but also tells how he is perceived by the younger generation in Russia today.
